Housing Development, Near Sawrey

The client asked ADL to explore the possibilities of developing a redundant orchard in the grounds of their house.  A number of issues had to be resolved including trees, a retaining wall to the highway and the proximity of neighbouring properties.

Because of a ‘locals only’ restriction on new build dwellings within the Lake District National Park, it was essential to achieve a minimum three houses to make a viable development profit.

The design took cognisance of the retaining wall and used a existing mature trees to provide screening.  Great care was taken to avoid overlooking neighbouring properties.  The design is ‘modern traditional’ incorporating local stone and slate.

The client undertook a self-build operation and made a very commendable job for a first time developer.
